Do the next right thing!

To navigate a crisis a leader must focus on doing the next right thing.

I moved to Houston in 2017 and was met with Hurricane Harvey, which decimated Houston. Hurricane Harvey dropped over 50 inches of rain, flooding nearly 30% of Harris County, destroying over 300,000 homes with a cost of over 125 Billion dollars. I was a new Houstonian and the new head of school facing the worst flood in the history of Houston.

In March of 2020, the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders around the world were faced with uncertainty, fear, and anger.

In early February 2021, Winter Storm Uri hit Texas and crippled the state as temperatures dropped to as low as six degrees. Uri left over 4.5 million homes and businesses without power.

The complexity of each crisis brought fear, confusion, and difficult decisions. As a leader, we can become overwhelmed by the complexity and challenge of a crisis. Our school team navigated tremendous challenges by applying the simple phrase, “do the next right thing”.  Don’t become overwhelmed by all the decisions that will need to be made, focus on doing the next right thing.

You can find clarity in crisis and confusion by focusing on the next right thing.
