This weekend my family enjoyed the opening weekend of the NFL. We witnessed teams with great team chemistry and others that played for themselves. Great teams are made of Ideal Team Players (ITP) who embody five vital qualities. Do you and your team embody these five important qualities?
Humble: ITP are Christ-centered and not self-centered. To be a good teammate, we must put the goals and needs of the team first. An ideal team player is humble enough to learn and grow while sacrificing for the team.
Philippians 2:4: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your interests but also to the interests of others.
Hungry: ITP pursue excellence and are willing to do more. Humility opens our hearts to growth, while hunger pushes us to do the work necessary to improve and get the job done right. An ideal team player gives maximum effort for the good of the team.
Colossians 3:23: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.
Smart (People): ITP care deeply about their team and community. Smart refers to being people smart; an ideal team player works well with others and treats them with care and respect.
2 Peter 1:5-7: For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
Positive: ITP will choose joy! The single most significant choice we can make each day is our attitude. A positive and joy-filled attitude can keep us moving forward, while a negative one can cripple progress. When an ideal team player is positive, it is like grease in the gears; everything runs smoother.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Loyal: ITP are faithful and steadfast. God is the definition of faithfulness, and He calls us to be faithful to Him and His children. Our loyalty to God and others is not half-hearted or convenient. It is an all-in commitment for all time. An ideal team player is committed to the mission and one another.
2 Thessalonians 3:5: May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.
3 Steps to Becoming an Ideal Team Player:
Commit to being an ideal team player wherever you are part of a team.
Pick one characteristic each week, memorize a Bible verse about it, and then practice living it.
